    Where are we?

In the centre of Prague, quarter called Vinohrady, about 245 m above the sea level. The name ”Vinohrady“ means “vineyards“ in English. Nearby, we can really find the remains of our king Charles IV. vineyards called Grébovka, which was founded in the mid - 14th century. But for a long time after, this area was not a part of Prague, what’s more there were almost no inhabitants there. There were just few farms and the king’s vineyards „only“.

After the gradual decline of the vineyards and amalgamation of the farms, finally in 1849 the new independent municipality Vinohrady could be found behind the gate of Prague New Town. In 1875 Vinohrady was divided to the quarters “Královské Vinohrady“ and “Žižkov“. As early as 1879 Královské Vinohrady was upgraded to a town with its own coat of arms with the motive of the vine-branch in hands of St. Wenceslas standing on the Prague walls.

In 1922 Vinohrady became part of Prague called Prague XII.. Today’s urban location of Prague 2, 3 and 10 has beginning in the 60´s of the last century.

In addition to the rests of the king’s vineyards like Grébovka, Riegrovy sady or Sady Svatopluka Čecha, many stone witnesses of the Czech history grew at Vinohrady. Just round the corner we can’t overlook the neo-renaissance water-tower of Vinohrady (Vinohradská vodárna). It is 40 m high and it was in operation for 71 years since 1891. Nowadays it houses just a few offices and apartments there. Its author Antonín Turek designed the other well-known building at Vinohrady as well, p.e. The National House of Vinohrady (Národní dům na Vinohradech) at The Square of Peace (Náměstí Míru) or the building of The Market Hall of Vinohrady (Vinohradská tržnice). Formidable complex of the summer residence of the industrialist Möritz Gröbe was built at the end of 19th century, also in neo-renaissance style. Nowadays the park is called Havlíčkovy sady and we can find there already mentioned king’s vineyards with the garden house, the Gröbe's villa, walls and the rest of the English park with imitation of caves.

Among the most treasured art-nouveau buildings of Vinohrady dating of the beginning of 20th century are The Main Train Station (Hlavní nádraží), The Theatre of Vinohrady (Divadlo na Vinohradech) or a bit older, neo-renaissance Smetana’s theatre (today’s Opera). We should not forget the clerical buildings like gothic revival Cathedral of Saint Ludmila at The Square of Peace, baroque vineyard Chapel of the Holy Family (Kaple svaté rodiny) above the Steps of Nusle (Nuselské schody) or younger buildings of The Church of the Holiest Heart of the Lord (Kostel nejsvětějšího srdce Páně) at The Square of Jiří z Poděbrad (Náměstí Jiřího z Poděbrad) having been built 1928 – 1932 or Mr. Jan Hus chapel behind water-tower.

From many other important and unforgettable Vinohrady buildings let’s remind just a famous twin-house of the Čapek brothers and of course the art-nouveau house number 1355 in Nitranská Street built in 1902. Now, we are in its cellars, which originally served as storage of coal of the inhabitants, and later as a laundry. The first idea of not letting be this place secret and changing it to comfortable place for citizens and out of town visitors as well was born in 1997. The cellars and laundry were reconstructed several times since then, the last reconstruction being at the beginning of the year 2007.

We believe today’s image of the cellar, which is called “Sudička”, will be appreciated especially by admirers of good wines (after all we are at „the king’s vineyard“), but also of coffee, tea and some delicious food. We have tried to prepare the widest possible choice of what you could expect in the friendly place like this. We shall do our best to make you comfortable here and return to us again and again. Hopefully, with a favourite drink of yours you will return to the great vineyard times of our most famous king…
